As Technology has evolved, There has become many ways to protect your property. And in the age we are in, these home security solutions have never been so accessible. It has become a matter of fact that we need to protect our home and all of our possessions, This is why people decide to make the jump to install "safety features" inside their homes such as smoke alarms and security cameras, however the one thing people usually don't think about are Home Alarm Systems.

So in this Article we will be giving you insight on how smart home security systems work.

How Alarm Systems monitor your Home
An Intruder alarm is made up of many parts and they all work in conjunction with each other to form a circuit. Where if one part of this circuit is disturbed and the alarms are armed then a bell or siren will sound and the right people will be notified.

Intruder alarms are typically made with 3 main components. These are:

Motion Sensor

These Devices are the main part of the system and are used to... well... Detect Movement. There are three varieties of Motion Detectors and they all have different pros and cons. These types are Passive Infrared (PIR) Sensors, Microwave Motions Sensors and Dual Tech Motion Sensors.

The premise of a Microwave Motion Sensor is that the sensor sends out a high radio frequency in the form of a wave and that waves bounces around a room and return back to the sensor. The sensor then can determine a "normal state of a room" and any disruption to this normal state triggers an alarm.

Passive Infrared (PIR) Sensors work a little differently as instead of using microwaves to detect disruption they just detect levels of infrared radiation. This works brilliantly as they are low profile and effective. The PIR Sensor has two slots that are made of a material that is sensitive to Infrared. When the Sensor detects a differential change between the two slots, this causes a pulse, which is classed as movement thus triggering an alarm.

A Dual Tech motion sensor is a mix of both of these previous sensors and the alarm will only trigger if there is infrared radiation and the microwaves are disrupted. This is great as it means there is less false alarms. For example with a PIR they can get triggered with a quick temperature rise in a room whereas wind moving an object can trigger a microwave sensor.

Control Panel

This Component is to be considered the "brains" of the burglar alarm system. This is the part of the system that gets told when there is movement detected and acts upon that.

It has a methodical approach to this process, this is in order to make sure there are minimum false positives and the alarms don't go off to animals/owners of the house. This approach is fairly simple and consists of 4 steps once the system has been armed.

  • Step 1: Movement has been detected or a door has been opened.
  • Step 2: Give an amount of time for a user to disarm a system. This part is variable based on the users needs.
  • Step 3: If the system isn't disarmed, Trigger an External and Internal Siren. This is emitted via the Bell Box.
  • Step 4: Notify the Monitoring Service Response Centre or Local Authority of the Disruption.

These steps together create the perfect solution for home security. Helping keep your peace of mind.

Bell Box

The Bell Box is a device that typically sits on the outside of a home and its primary function is to create a loud siren noise when the Control Panel orders it to. They are usually very noticeable and include a strobe light which blinks to warn any potential criminals that the home is armed.

The Bell Box has been proven to be an effective component to a home security system as it brings attention to the house, this is what a criminal doesn't want.
