Fire Alarms
R&S currently hold an SSAIB and BAFE Accreditation meaning we are industry standard approved and available to install, upgrade, takeover and repair fire alarms to the regulations. A fire alarm system can be critical in prevention of injury or death in a fire situation and as such, we urge everyone to ensure their fire alarm systems meet the relevant regulations and receive regular maintenance.
Current UK fire alarm regulations state that all business premises must have an appropriate fire alarm detection system unless all of the following terms apply to your business.
- Your premises are small, simple, and single-storey or open-plan
- You don’t store any high-risk substances, such as chemicals
- You don’t undertake any high-risk activities, such as cooking
- You don’t have any vulnerable occupants, such as the very young, elderly or disabled
- A fire would be easily spotted if it broke out anywhere in the premises
- A shout of ‘fire!’ would be easily heard by all occupants
Here are some of the basic standards of a fire alarm for your premises:
- An automatic system is advised if a fire could go undetected and/or block exit routes.
- Sounders must be integrated accordingly so everyone in the building can hear the alarm clearly.
- A call point must be fitted by every exit on every floor of the building.
- You must test the fire alarm weekly using a different call point each time.
- The alarm must be serviced every 6 months minimum.
- The service and maintenance must be carried out by a competent person (BAFE/SSAIB Accredited).
Failure to meet fire alarm standards could result in a large fine and major neglection can even lead to prison time.
